Standard Coffee Table Measurements
The height of your coffee table should depend primarily on the height of your sofa and secondarily on personal factors like whether or not you want to eat dinner at the table, keep dogs away or take advantage of under-table storage. Most designers agree that the coffee table should be no lower than 1″-2″ inches below your couch cushions. Bassett Furniture says that while there is no “standard”, most couches have a seat height of 19″. This would then dictate that your coffee table should be no lower than 17″ high for a standard couch. Indeed, many interior designers recommend a coffee table height of 16″-18″.
If you have a home with low ceilings, you may consider lower profile furniture to create the feeling of higher ceilings, including a lower profile sofa. If this is the case, you could be looking at a cushion height of as low as 16″. In this case, a low profile coffee table will help you keep everything in proportion. Here are some great examples of low profile coffee tables:
Low Profile Coffee Tables
This great table has a height of 15″ so is perfect to match with a low profile couch. It is neutral enough to work with virtually any design scheme and the glass top lends an airiness to the piece that won’t overwhelm a small space.
Notching in at 18″ this table is at the high end of standard, but it’s minimalist styling would work well in a home with low ceilings.
This table is reminiscent of the one on my neighbor’s living room. At only 14″ high this coffee table is truly low profile! I also love the idea of transparent furniture to take volume out of a room and would add this to my list of tactics for a home with low ceilings!
If the top table is too modern for your home, this one is a nice alternative. I think this piece can work with many aesthetics and is also lower profile at only 17″ high.
I love this table for it’s style and it’s height. Coming in at only 16″ high, this table is the perfect height for a room with low ceilings. It comes in several finishes including pewter, black, silver and gold.
The above table is at the low end of standard with a height of 16.5″ and has great style. The shelf almost floats in the air!
This table has a walnut finish and is below the standard height at 15.2″ so would work well in a room with low ceilings.
Final Thoughts!
Having a home or room with low ceilings doesn’t have to be a dealbreaker if you implement some practical design tips (click here if you missed the 8 ways) to elevate your space. Any of the low profile tables above would make a great addition to a room with low ceilings – whether that’s your main floor or a basement. I’d love to hear what you think!
