Since entering the wonderful world of blogging, I’ve been inspired by some pretty incredible projects from design bloggers on the web. One post type I keep running across is the One Room Challenge (ORC) and I knew I had to find out what it was all about. The ORC is a semiannual design event started by the blogger at Calling It Home – taking place in April and October – that is in its twelfth year. Twice a year, 20 featured designers (and hundreds of other guest bloggers, like me) choose a room and redesign it in six weeks, documenting progress along the way. It seems like a fun way to have some accountability to get the job done – sort of like Weight Watchers for DIYers – so I decided to give it a try. I’ll be re imagining my entryway and sharing it here at the blog over the next six weeks. I hope you stay with me for my fresh foyer update!

Here is a picture of the existing foyer. It’s a bit of a forgotten space and I’ve been wanting to replace the rug in the entryway because it’s seen better days.
I had the entire entryway (up and downstairs) painted a few years ago a pretty green that I still like, so that is staying. Also staying is a black demilune console table I purchased around the same time as the paint job. I really like the black against the green walls and off-white trim, so I am using this as my jumping off point for my mood board.
One of the things I want to do is paint the inside of the door black. I had painted the outside of the door (and the one that preceded it) black many years ago but neglected the inside. We also need a new handleset as the one we have is original to the house and hasn’t worked correctly since our new front door was installed.
I am also thinking of painting the stair rail and newel posts black. I am not a fan of oak and while I’m not in a position to do anything about the oak hardwood floors that run through the entire first floor of the house, I do like the idea of getting rid of the orangey yellow wood on the dated stairway.
The rug, as mentioned, needs to go. I found this one online for a great price and fell in love with it. It references the black and white ceramic tile trend that is all the rage right now and of which I am also a big fan.
I will also update the flushmount lighting in the hallway. I’m looking at several options and haven’t decided yet. What do you think? We replaced the large hanging pendant two years ago and I need something that will complement that look in brushed nickel.
The final step will be the decor. I’m thinking about a small gallery wall above the console table and maybe a lamp. I’m partial to mercury glass and think it will tie into the brushed nickel in the space. I want a neutral wreath for the inside of the door and I have an old metal umbrella stand from my childhood home that could use an update.
I’m super psyched to get going on this and look forward to sharing my progress at the blog. It should be fun! To see what the featured designers and some of the other guest participants are doing head over to the One Room Challenge Page!.
