Updated November 2019 – A couple of years ago, I felt like the only person celebrating Christmas that didn’t own a holiday-themed pillow and I am out to remedy that this year. I found a great neutral option at Home Goods for my blue living room, but needed to buy some for the more oft-used family room. In my searches, I’ve put together a short list of neutral Christmas pillows I think my family would love to lay their heads on.

I am updating my foyer as part of the One Room Challenge and one of the design elements I swapped out was my old botanical rug for something more up-to-date. The reaction to the rug I choose was really positive, so I thought I’d share some of the other contenders for my entryway. Here are 10 foyer rugs that would do well welcoming guests into your home, and won’t break the bank. All of the choices are 4×6 (or very close to those dimensions) and less than $60! (more…)
Modern farmhouse design is all the rage right now, owing in large part to Joanna Gaines and her HGTV show Fixer Upper. Adding some of this style to your home doesn’t have to break with bank with our list of 20 farmhouse finds under $20.
I think the appeal of modern farmhouse is that it pairs two aesthetics that are seemingly at odds with one another: modern and farmhouse. Before the Gaines’ entered my life, I thought of farmhouse as gingham check curtains and lots of raw wood. More country than necessarily chic. And modern to me has always meant simple, but a little bit cold. But, somehow the two together work beautifully, at least as conceived by JoJo. While there is a lot of wood in her designs, most of it is painted white. Stark white. And she contrasts that with a lot of black – in her doors and windows, rugs and wall decor. The effect is a simplicity that is at once clean and warm and therein lies the fascination with the trend that finds followers from New England to Milwaukee to Phoenix and back to Waco.
If you love the look – or even if you’re not ready to fully commit – we’ve found 20 fun farmhouse accents to easily and inexpensively add to your decor. Enjoy! (more…)

I was sick with a summer cold (the worst!) last Saturday and spent the day in bed watching HGTV – specifically, everyone’s favorite show, Fixer Upper. I just can’t seem to get enough of the farmhouse style they create so effortlessly, or of Chip and Jo who seem like people you’d want to hang with in real life.
One of the things that struck me was how important the lighting choices are in the Fixer Upper designs. The fixtures they use are beautiful statement pieces of functional decor. But they also serve to tie the room together. So, in the spirit of the Fixer Upper farmhouse style, I thought it would be fun to pair up some farmhouse lighting looks from the show with lights you can purchase for yourself online! (more…)

My dad, in his day, was extraordinarily handy, always fiddling in his shop. As a kid, it seemed a weird hobby; as a homeowner now – a priceless skill set. Every Father’s Day, we would set out to find him the next greatest tool…the one that would change his life. That, and the requisite white tube socks and t-shirts. I later married a man who would turn out to be equally skilled this way. Oddly, he requests socks and t-shirts too. To the point at hand though, let’s talk tools for dad.
With the dads’ help and the input of This Old House and Tools of the Trade, I’ve compiled a list of tools the handy dad might enjoy adding to his collection. This is a general list, not intended for any specialties, but does presume some experience with tool handling. I’ve tried to include some at varying price points. (more…)
