This is the second post in a series about my family room shiplap fireplace redo. You can read the first post here.
Armed with the inspiration for my shiplap fireplace redo, I thought I was ready to pull the trigger and get started. But then panic struck – I realized that all the shiplap photos I’d been ogling featured bright white wood. The woodwork in my house – including my kitchen cabinets and family room built-ins – is all a creamy warm white from Benjamin Moore called Navajo White.

In my job I see a lot of fantastic new construction homes and one trend that I’ve been eyeing is the shiplap fireplace. It comes in a lot of flavors: with a traditional mantel or with just a mantel shelf, full height shiplap or only on top, and so on. This wall in our kitchen, in which there is an original fireplace (we think), serves no other purpose. It cuts the otherwise large kitchen in two, thereby extinguishing any designs on that extra-large center island, or any island at all for that matter. Still, we are committed to preserving it (for now). I like the stone veneer fireplace and have even warmed to the off-center firebox. A burning fireplace is beautiful to behold. Our non-working fireplace is anything but. When you enter into the kitchen from the dining or living room, this is your view. Meh. This farmhouse needs some fireplace love, and decor. (more…)
