I see a red door and I want it painted black. OK maybe it wasn’t red, but it was white and now its black and I love it. The first thing on my list for the One Room Challenge was the interior of our front door. And all I can say is, if you want to create drama in a space, the Rolling Stones were right, take a door and paint it black.

Since entering the wonderful world of blogging, I’ve been inspired by some pretty incredible projects from design bloggers on the web. One post type I keep running across is the One Room Challenge (ORC) and I knew I had to find out what it was all about. The ORC is a semiannual design event started by the blogger at Calling It Home – taking place in April and October – that is in its twelfth year. Twice a year, 20 featured designers (and hundreds of other guest bloggers, like me) choose a room and redesign it in six weeks, documenting progress along the way. It seems like a fun way to have some accountability to get the job done – sort of like Weight Watchers for DIYers – so I decided to give it a try. I’ll be re imagining my entryway and sharing it here at the blog over the next six weeks. I hope you stay with me for my fresh foyer update! (more…)
We have two fireplaces in our house. One is in our formal living room and works, but we never light a fire in it (to see the recent mantel makeover project in that room, click here). I love the smell of wood burning and look forward to our first fire of the year every fall. Until that happens (which might be soon as the nights are getting chilly around here!) I thought I would dress up the mantel and hearth a bit for the fall season. Let me know what you think of this simple fall fireplace. (more…)
Does your house have a season, one whose colors seem to reflect the hues in your own design? My husband and I have always said that fall is this house’s season, perhaps because our living room is full of various reds and gold tones, perhaps because the couch is covered in a soft chenille fabric. Whatever the reason, the house seems to come into its own in autumn and our family likes it that way. We do cozy best. The kids are happiest when snuggled under fleecy blankets on the couch, their legs intertwined. (more…)
We finally packed up the remnant ocean blues of summer and made fall introductions. The porch was initially reluctant to bid its vibrant friend adieu but soon warmed to the golden mums and burnished reds of autumn. When decorating outside, I go for bright. I realize many prefer the muted tones of whites and pale greens that pair nicely with that farmhouse aesthetic and I myself appreciate those color options inside where I have to work with the mess I already own. Outside though, I can be bold. (more…)
