It’s become customary to celebrate holidays by outfitting our homes with their markers, by creating vignettes to pay homage to the first pilgrim. So, it should be with Easter and Spring. The homestead could use a refresh.
The house doesn’t need to be ornament-laden like it was in December. Spring is clean, simple and pretty. I don’t own nor want 20 ceramic bunnies and chicks. I rely on pieces I already own and then pair them with the best thing Spring has to offer us: nature. (more…)
Space and Storage. Everyone wants it and no one ever seems to have enough of it; excepting for the small, small-house contingent, who’ve made their tiny Murphy bed and can now lie in it. The rest of us relish our personal and family space, our work and storage spaces. Messy lives crave order in some capacity, even if only in our garage or our pantry. And no matter the Facebook impression, everyone’s got a mess. (more…)
Do you have the fever for the flavor of a farmhouse? You’re not alone. The fervor has swept the country. And why not? The farmhouse mood is easy and relaxed.
The historic farmhouse may, however, be a far cry from the image your mind conjures with its open floor plan and shabby chic flourishes. Farmhouses were historically small in scale and designed for practicality. As families and needs changed, small rooms were opened to allow for more family and multi-purpose space. Perhaps, our love of the farmhouse is a nod to our past, to a simpler time, when the home was considered an adjunct to the land. The wrap-around porch, still synonymous with the farmhouse, illustrates that love of the land and the timeless charm of country living.
Though my family lives in an authentic antique farmhouse, I find myself feeling out-farmhoused after only one episode of HGTV’s Fixer Upper. After a marathon, I’m packing my bags for Waco. The fact is we can’t all demo our homes and start fresh, nor would we want to, when push comes to shove. Most days, I love my home, quirky charms and all. So, what can we do in our own homes to add some of the farmhouse feel without undertaking a major renovation? These are features you can add to the home itself, without breaking the bank. The list does not include furnishings or decor suggestions, as that is a list unto itself. (more…)
As much as I love to shop locally, I have to admit, the convenience of shopping online can’t be beat. Who doesn’t love shopping in their pajamas? Plus, it’s so easy to compare products across many retailers in a short period of time. So, I was uber excited to learn that Wayfair is a local company!
Last year I was looking for end tables for my living room, and I couldn’t find what I was looking for (and for a price I wanted to pay) at my usual furniture haunts. So, I took a chance and pulled up wayfair.com. I was surprised at the selection and the price points they offered and settled on the set of metal and glass nesting tables you see in the pic above. The tables shipped for free (everything over $49 ships for free on the site) and arrived well packaged. It was an easy assembly task (for the Ikea veterans that we are) and once put together, the tables were surprisingly sturdy. They’ve gotten a lot of use since they were put into service last year. I love the way they look and am pleased with their versatility.* (more…)
