A few months ago, my husband and I spent a Sunday looking at new construction homes in a neighboring town. We were unsure where our oldest son would be attending high school in the fall and were exploring all of our options. The area of the country that I live in has some of the highest housing prices in the country – Massachusetts is consistently ranked in the top five of most expensive states to live in according to the Council for Community and Economic Research’s Cost of Living Index. We live outside of Boston but still within commuting distance (if you consider 30+ miles commutable) and the towns we were interested in had strong school districts, so we knew our housing dollar wasn’t going to go too far. But even I was surprised at just how little nearly $1M gets you these days.

This is it – the final week of my first One Room Challenge (an online design event started by Linda at the blog Calling It Home, that challenges featured designers and guest bloggers to re-imagine one space in the span of six weeks – this time the challenge was extended to seven weeks due to the storms and wildfires), and it’s time for the big foyer reveal. As part of a mantel makeover in my living room, I updated a pair of drum shade sconces with leftover fabric from a reupholstery project to create custom fabric lampshades.

We are into week five of the One Room Challenge, an online design event started by Linda at the blog Calling It Home, that challenges featured designers and guest bloggers to re-imagine one space in the span of six weeks. This week if these walls could talk, they’d say that this week, I didn’t get much done. But that’s OK, because last week Linda announced that for the first time in the history of the ORC, we would be given an extra week to finish the challenge. Due to all of the storms and fires that have hit our country these past couple of months, she found it only fair to tack on a week for those that needed it. And in true procrastinator style, once I heard that, I slacked off a bit. I did, however, address the wall areas of the foyer this week and here’s what happened.
