In Need of a Refresh
As stated before, I live in a 1865 farmhouse. The decor is more traditional than modern, owing to the trend at the time we purchased our furniture. Those were carefree days: no kids devouring our time or impinging upon our decision making, and two incomes to blow on furniture we foolishly thought we’d be mad about forever. Dark days they were. (Smiley face).
The point is we live in a transient world – wanting always to be moving and exploring, discovering the next great thing, or great look. The office, which desperately needed some attention anyway, is an ideal room for that exploration, limited only by the primary piece of furniture we want to keep – the mission desk we bought some 14 years ago. Most of the rooms in our home are lived in. Our office, however, has become an avoidance issue. With neither my husband nor myself regularly working from home, the kids now working in their bedrooms, and the desktop computer having been rendered all but obsolete, its only purpose has been that of storage. Until recently. My husband had to take a video conference call from home one day and no matter where he attempted to place his laptop in the room, there was a mountain (or more aptly a landslide) of stuff behind him, in the shot. It was dark, messy, and depressing. So, we’re undertaking an office overhaul – in pieces, to be delivered to you the same way. (more…)
If you have a wood-sided house, painting the exterior of your home is one of those home maintenance expenses you love to hate. A nicely painted home is essential for good curb appeal and to stay within acceptable social norms 😊, but no one really wants to spend the money on it. It would be much more fun to add a great patio in the backyard or re-do a bathroom. But alas, it’s something that must be done, so let’s talk about getting it done the right way. (more…)
Space and Storage. Everyone wants it and no one ever seems to have enough of it; excepting for the small, small-house contingent, who’ve made their tiny Murphy bed and can now lie in it. The rest of us relish our personal and family space, our work and storage spaces. Messy lives crave order in some capacity, even if only in our garage or our pantry. And no matter the Facebook impression, everyone’s got a mess. (more…)
Inspired by St. Patrick’s Day weekend, we’re highlighting six historic green paint colors for your Maison Mass!
The Backstory
I will admit it, I hate making decisions about paint colors for my house! Don’t get me wrong, I love color, its just that committing it to the walls of my home terrifies me!
My Maison Mass is a pretty standard center entrance colonial-style house built in 1989. Several years ago, I decided to have my foyer painted. Since it’s a two-story number, that meant I was choosing a color for not only my first floor hallway – but for our second floor landing as well. Too big of a job to get the color wrong!
Anyone who knows me, knows I naturally gravitate to muted shades of yellow, because they are cheery (and safe!). But the exterior of our home is yellow, and I had recently painted the connected living room and dining room in yellow, as well as one of the boy’s rooms. Too much? My husband thought so and put his foot down :).
All About Green
So, I started thinking about green as a viable option. Green is second only to blue as a favorite color. Scientifically, the human eye is more sensitive to green than any other hue – in fact we can see more shades of green than any other color. Green is ubiquitous in nature and signals spring, renewal and growth. From a psychology perspective, green relaxes and soothes and is thought to promote balance and harmony. What better characteristics to bring to a home? (more…)
