Does your house have a season, one whose colors seem to reflect the hues in your own design? My husband and I have always said that fall is this house’s season, perhaps because our living room is full of various reds and gold tones, perhaps because the couch is covered in a soft chenille fabric. Whatever the reason, the house seems to come into its own in autumn and our family likes it that way. We do cozy best. The kids are happiest when snuggled under fleecy blankets on the couch, their legs intertwined.

So, though the chenille and crimson are in place already, there are a few autumn accessories I’m eager to pull out to warm the family spaces and make them snuggle-worthy. I wanted to share my favorite cozy finds here that would surely help warm any space. I chose a lot of pieces with neutral tones – largely because my space is already so bold in color. These colors will pair nicely with other neutrals for a more sedate look or neutralize a more ‘red’ look like mine.
Blankets. Nothing says cozy like a warm throw. Drape over your chair, sofa, or ottoman, or tuck in a nearby basket. Use a plaid blanket like this one from Amazon to warm monochromatic furniture or a simpler solid to pair with a busier room.
This handwoven basket from Pier 1 Imports is perfect for blanket and throw storage or any other odds and ends you want tucked away and off your floor. The color is warm and the banana bark and sisal texture stylish.
Tables are nice but ottomans can do double duty. With a nice tray, it can be the backdrop for a candle and pumpkin vignette or more practically, for popcorn and movie candy, or solo – for stockinged feet wrapped in blankets. This Pier 1 Imports ottoman with its straight lines and muted colors gently walks the line between stylish and cozy.
Sometimes, there just isn’t enough seating. Bean bags are great in a kids’ space but they’re amoeba-ness is messy in the family room. Poufs are a good option for quick seating that tucks away and doesn’t require much space. This pouf from Build.com is the same color palette as my other picks.
If you think the pouf is just a puff piece, you might want seating of a different variety, something more substantial. I love this black upholstered mid century chair from Amazon. My house isn’t mid-century either but that’s what makes this piece so great. It’s black, so… like khaki pants, will go with most anything. It’s stylish and actually really comfortable.
Texture, texture. This fun furry pillow from Pier 1 Imports will cozy and space. Maybe you think it’s too much for your couch; try it on a bench seat or dining chair. It will catch wandering eyes and delight weary heads.
Cozy is more than soft to the touch though. It’s about colors, textures, and lines. This 3 dimensional basket art brings with it a warm, vintage feel and owing to its simplicity allows for ease of transition into any design space.
I like the heft and height of this table lamp from LightingDirect. Sometimes, table lamps are too short to shed any real light, certainly too short to read by. This one is elongated enough to cast a solid glow in the room and substantial enough at the base so you know it’s there.
I suppose there are some people who don’t do candles. I don’t know any. I love candlelight for any purpose, even if I’m sitting under a brighter reading light. These votives from Amazon can be used bedside, in a centerpiece, on an ottoman, anywhere you have a flat surface.
Fall is full of comfort foods, to be sure. We always have an array of cheeses on hand but fall seems to provide an excuse to put them on display with the other fruits of the season, and maybe a glass of vino. This cheese board from Amazon will look great covered in formaggio or on display against the kitchen backsplash. Don’t hide it away.
These copper Moscow mule mugs are so handsome looking. They pair nicely with any serving-ware and will look superb on your harvest table.
These copper mugs might be too flashy for your morning cup of java. Can’t you instead envision yourself curled up, sipping your hot coffee in these beautiful glazed mugs? I can almost smell it.
Perhaps you take your coffee in bed, if you’re lucky. These grey and white plaid flannel sheets will keep you snuggly all fall and winter. I confess to having flannel sheets on my bed already. Black is a color we’ve long thought off-putting. No more. Black and white, and every shade of grey are now entering our homes in big ways, not just as an accessorizing color palette. Pair this with an all white comforter if you want a simple, clean look, or a solid color for a brighter look, and mix patterns for a bold take.
Nesting isn’t just for birds, or new moms, for that matter. It’s for anyone with the inclination to create a warm, soothing space for the family. Fall and the cooler weather seem to invoke that sentiment in many of us. Revel in the season and snuggle up to the cozy.
